Repeal of the Medicare Cap on Outpatient Therapy and amendment for Physical Therapists to Opt Out of Medicare

Repeal of the Medicare Cap on Outpatient Therapy and amendment for Physical Therapists to Opt Out of Medicare

On my mind today: Following is a list of the Members of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health. We need to contact these folks to ask them to support H.R. 1546 (112th): Medicare Access to Rehabilitation Services Act of 2011. This will amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to repeal the Medicare outpatient rehabilitation therapy caps. By repealing the outpatient rehabilitation caps we will allow patients with chronic illnesses and complicated recoveries to continue to access the care they need to live a full and functional life. If your representative is not on this list, please contact them anyway. Every representative matters. Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health Rep. Kevin Brady, TX, Chairman Rep. Sam Johnson, TX Rep. Because the current law does not allow physical therapists to “opt out” of Medicare, small physical therapist owned private practices that do not participate with Medicare are prohibited from treating Medicare patients. This prohibits a significant portion of the population from seeking physical therapy care from the provider of their choice. Nearly all other healthcare providers and physicians are able to “opt out” and many service providers (massage therapists and personal trainers) are not […]

IF YOU HAD ANY DOUBT…

IF YOU HAD ANY DOUBT...

Since I posted my last article explaining the importance of supporting physical therapists in Maryland around the challenge to their state practice act, there has been a lot of discussion in social media regarding the dry needling issue. Detractors of dry needling seized this opportunity to launch yet another attack on the technique, with the same old arguments. My response on Twitter in particular has been to get across the message that whether or not you accept the evidence behind the use of dry needling, this is about an issue bigger than arguing the research behind one particular technique. THIS IS ABOUT SUPPORTING COLLEAGUES IN OUR OWN PROFESSION AS THEY FIGHT AGAINST THE ABILITY OF OUTSIDE INTERESTS TO DICTATE OUR STATE PRACTICE ACT! Did that come across loud and clear? Make no mistake, the Maryland Acupuncture Society has sent out an alert nationwide to other state chapters encouraging acupuncturists to send letters to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. They are encouraging their members to write letters to influence the decision being made. Don’t believe me? You can see it right here: http://bit.ly/QyTJox 200 dollar loans direct payday loan lenders texas The problem is that they are asking for letters of support based on faulty information and confusion of the issue, as seen from direct excerpts of their letter to the Maryland Board of Physical Therapy Examiners: “As licensed acupuncturists are already extensively and competently trained and duly licensed to employ the use of this procedure in their daily treatment of patients, MAS holds that there is little to no public need established to justify allowing physical therapists to conduct this invasive procedure with such minimal requirements for competent education, training, and regulatory monitoring as these regulations would allow. For these reason, we strongly suggest that these regulations […]

A tribe is born

A tribe is born

            * This is just a quick post to let everyone know about the awesome event that happened last night! As everyone knows, Dave and I were fortunate enough to present a poster at AHS12. While we were at AHS, we met many amazing people and developed friendships that cut past all of the superficial stuff that usually fills up the first encounters with new friends. Out of our conversations about what was important in life and how to share the message of ancestral health on a more global scale, an idea was born. We decided to have a Tweetchat using the hashtag #1tribe, to signify that we are all one tribe (not we are #1, but we are all one). I co-moderated the event with Alec Henderson, who graciously put together a summary post and transcript here If you have an interest in building a community of like-minded folks who have a passion for reaching others and living a healthier, happier life, please read the post, and join us for the next #1tribe chat on Thursday, September 20th at 8pm EST. Everyone is welcome, everyone has a place in the tribe. *Photo source unknown

Review of It Starts With Food by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig

Review of It Starts With Food by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig

Review of It Starts With Food You know how you look forward to Christmas morning? Even as an adult, you wake up a bit early, filled with expectation? That’s the way I felt waiting for It Starts With Food to arrive in the mail. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy to review, and as luck would have it, my copy arrived just before Memorial Day weekend. I spent three days sitting in the sun (soaking up Vitamin D!) while reading this book with a highlighter in one hand and a pen in the other. I recommend that you buy a few highlighters before your copy arrives! You will most definitely want to take notes in the book and mark things to refer to later. This book is filled with good information throughout. Whether you are brand new to the idea of eating real food, or a seasoned veteran, you will open this book again and again over the years to refresh your thinking on important topics such as hormonal factors which influence our brain and body (insulin, leptin, glucagon, and cortisol), the mechanism behind leaky gut syndrome (bouncers defending Club Body), inflammation and autoimmune illnesses, balancing Omega 3 and 6 consumption, and emotional factors that drive our nutrition choices. Along with the good science-y stuff, It Starts With Food teaches you how to plan meals, what a portion looks like, and how to create a meal focusing on delicious, healthy ingredients rather than complicated recipes. They discuss nutrition for special populations (pregnant women, kids, folks with autoimmune illnesses, active individuals and vegetarians/vegans) to help fine tune the plan for your individual needs. I have referred to this section several times in the past few weeks while consulting with my clients, as I tend to see folks who […]
