Power Supply – Delicious Paleo Meals

Power Supply - Delicious Paleo Meals

In keeping with the theme of building community, I wanted to let all of you local DC/MD/VA readers know about a fantastic company right in our area, called Power Supply. for buying cars renovating I was fortunate enough to meet Robert Morton (and business partner Patrick Smith) at AHS12. Through our conversation, I realized they were the geniuses behind the company Power Supply, which provides delicious Paleo meals delivered to over 20 local Crossfit gyms. They describe the company as: “Two guys whose lives were changed by Crossfit/Paleo, a whole bunch of energy for helping others see the same results we did, a total jedi chef and awesome support from the local CrossFit community… that’s the ingredient list for Power Supply.” Their chef, Rachelle Slotnik (a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America, Dave’s Alma Matter), prepares healthy gluten, grain, legume, seed oil free meals which are delivered twice a week to local Crossfit gyms for pick up during the gym’s business hours. Non Crossfitters can utilize this meal service, too. This is a great idea for folks who don’t like to/want to/have time to cook every day, as well as families who want to have a few quick, easy, healthy meals in the refrigerator for busy week night dinners. I highly encourage you to check out their website to learn more about how this works. With back to school chaos right around the corner, I know that our household will benefit from having prepared, fresh, healthy meals on hand that Dave doesn’t have to cook and I don’t have to clean up!

A tribe is born

A tribe is born

            * This is just a quick post to let everyone know about the awesome event that happened last night! As everyone knows, Dave and I were fortunate enough to present a poster at AHS12. While we were at AHS, we met many amazing people and developed friendships that cut past all of the superficial stuff that usually fills up the first encounters with new friends. Out of our conversations about what was important in life and how to share the message of ancestral health on a more global scale, an idea was born. We decided to have a Tweetchat using the hashtag #1tribe, to signify that we are all one tribe (not we are #1, but we are all one). I co-moderated the event with Alec Henderson, who graciously put together a summary post and transcript here If you have an interest in building a community of like-minded folks who have a passion for reaching others and living a healthier, happier life, please read the post, and join us for the next #1tribe chat on Thursday, September 20th at 8pm EST. Everyone is welcome, everyone has a place in the tribe. *Photo source unknown

AHS12

AHS12

#AHS12 We just got back from The Ancestral Health Symposium (AHS12). For any readers who are unfamiliar with AHS, it is a three day conference which brings together scientists, healthcare providers, and lay people who share an interest in living healthier lives, based on Ancestral principals such as whole foods, movement, stress management, community, and sleep. The symposium was held on the campus of Harvard Law School. In the fall of 2011 I submitted a proposal to present a poster at AHS12. I felt that we had some important information to share with the community regarding the use of Ancestral nutrition as an adjunct to treatment for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). As many of you know, this is an issue that hits close to home for us, as Dave (my husband) was diagnosed with T1D when he was 32 years old. We have learned so much in the past 6 years, and want to help other T1D’s navigate this journey. We were ecstatic when our proposal was accepted, and began collecting and sifting through the data. All of our hard work was worth it when we saw the finished product presenting the Effects of Ancestral Nutrition of Type 1 Diabetes.  First, I have to say that the whole experience of AHS12 was so overwhelming and exciting that I could barely think straight! The response to our poster was really positive, and we got to talk with a number of people and answer their questions. We were also visited by some of our favorite people in the community. We met many of our online friends for the first time, and were able to spend more time with people we had met before. The Death Wrap

The Death Wrap

If you are an ATC or PT, chances are you will have an athlete who sustains a deep quad contusion at some point. Here, my friend Jesse Dimick, ATC/PTA demonstrates a technique he uses with his athletes as the Clinic Director at sportsandpt.com in the Boston, MA area. Jesse can be found on Twitter @jdimick Death Wrap for Deep Quad Contusions Video: http://youtu.be/mOQ2v_NjppA Supply List QDA (tuff skin) 2 inch elastikon (AC tape) pre wrap CALLCENTERCAFE.COM/FACEBOOK/getting a loan with poor credithttp://mostwatertraining.com/mac_mac/ 2 inch stretch tape Application Spray area with tuff skin. Lay down pre wrap. Cut half strip of Elastikon.  You do not want to go completely around extremity with these strips. Have athlete brace themselves because you will want to lay down Elastikon strips with some force. When applying to quad have a tape roll under heel to keep knee slightly flexed and relaxed.  Pull strips to full tension and apply over injured area overlapping strips approximately 1-2 inches above and below the contusion. Complete wrap by covering the area with stretch tape with mid tension. This wrap works best when applied immediately after the injury and kept on for 12 hours until the first treatment. The athlete will keep it on overnight until treatment the next day.  I normally re-apply and use for a total of 48-72 hours.

Finding a way back to health after Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease

Finding a way back to health after Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease

Today’s post is a testimonial from a client who had been dealing with chronic pain due to Lyme Disease and Fibromyalgia. She was referred to me for a consultation and has had excellent results after implementing a “Whole 30” eating plan. I’ll let you read her story in her own words: Loans No Credit Check No Fees A lot of you are probably wondering why you should do a Whole30.  I wondered the same thing when I met with Ann in May.  As a full-time working mom, I figured it was normal to be tired, foggy, and achy all the time. Everyone can drink coffee at midnight and fall asleep a half hour later right?  (Um…if you can, I’ve been told that’s not a good sign…)  The back story: A little over a year ago, one of my kids gently patted my head and pain ran through me like a lightning bolt. That episode was a wake up call because I realized I was in pain, foggy headed, and downing Advil and coffee like it was going out of style. After a couple of doctor visits, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease and fibromyalgia. They treated the Lyme disease and started me on fibro medication. The meds helped somewhat, but were not a complete fix. Something had to give. Pain sucks! Chronic pain sucks even more!  Enter Ann:   Ann was recommended to me not too long ago as someone who has had success in controlling autoimmune disease symptoms through dietary changes.  I reached out for a consult. She suggested two options when we met. Either try a Paleo diet, or really see what could be causing some of my issues and try the Whole30.   Both seemed extreme. My thoughts went something like, “Whaaat?  No muffin on the run? How will I get the kids out the door? What […]
