The Whole 30, Day 1

Today I am starting The Whole 30. It is going to be a challenge. Let me give you a little background on the concept. The Whole 30 is basically like a “reset” button for your health. It’s a way to become really, keenly aware of what you are putting in your body daily, and asking yourself if it is helping you reach your goal of being healthy. It is a 30 day project to help you break away from unhealthy habits and create new, lifelong awareness of how what we eat affects how we feel. Dallas and Melissa Hartwig are the geniuses behind Whole 9 Life and The Whole 30. I love their philosophy: “We have built our entire business around telling you what you NEED, not what you WANT.” active bank and credit I can relate to that statement, because as a physical therapist, I spend my day telling clients what they need, not what they want. I am not being mean when I tell a patient that they need to lose 30 pounds if they want their knee to stop hurting when they go up the stairs. I am stating a fact – try it for yourself, carry a 30 pound weight up and down stairs 20 times, and see how your joints feel. You may not want to hear this; but, you need to if you want a real solution to your problem. When I first heard about The Whole 30, I looked into it and decided that since I was already eating according to a gluten free, grain free, whole foods-based, Paleo eating plan, I didn’t really need to change anything else. (i.e. it looked like too much work when I was already feeling the best I have felt in my entire adult life). See, I’m […]

Happy New Year!!

I have not put up a real blog post over the holidays; but, I have been working hard on some things that are coming out over the next few weeks: My second guest blog post for Eric Cressey of Cressey Performance has been sent out! I will let everyone know when it goes live. The topic is Trigger Point Dry Needling and Rotator Cuff Injuries. Check out Eric’s fantastic blog at http://www.ericcressey.com/personal-trainers-fitness-professionals-5-tips-marketing-physical-therapists I did a guest post for Stephanie of 321delish that will be going live in the next few weeks. The topic was “5 Reasons to See a Physical Therapist before You Are Injured.” Again, I will post the link when it goes live; but, in the meantime, check out Steph and Chloe’s blog at http://321delish.com/ I received a huge care package from Athleta a week ago (yea!) They sent me several outfits to try out and review. I am having so much fun wearing the different outfits for various activities, and dressing them up or down depending on the situation. I will be putting together a photo and video review, as well as a written review – look for it right here within the next 2 weeks. I received a nice package from Eric Cressey as well and will be reviewing his “Assess and Correct” products. The product contains a DVD as well as four written guides. I will be making my way through the materials in January and posting about it when I finish. I did an interview with Jarod Carter for his blog. The interview was about my experience with opening my private practice. Jarod also runs a cash-based practice, and his blog seeks to help more PT’s become private practitioners and business owners. See Jarod’s blog at http://www.drjarodcarter.com/ I was contacted by Web PT (the EMR platform we […]

Happy Holidays

I wanted to take a moment in the middle of the holiday bustle to connect with you.  The past 3 months have been a whirlwind of activity and opportunities and each of you has played a part.  Thank you to my family for all of your support, to my patients for believing in me and following me on this new adventure, and to all of the contacts I have made through networking and social media. Exciting things are on the horizon for Prana Physical Therapy in 2012 and I can’t wait to share it with all of you.  Thank you for making it possible for me to follow my dreams.  I hope that I can play a part in helping you reach your goals for a healthy, happy year ahead. Be well, Ann

Review of the Inov8 F-Lite 230

F-lite 230 Crossfit Shoe Review from Ann Wendel on Vimeo. I have been dying to try out the shoe that is all the rage among the Crossfit community right now, the Inov8 F-Lite 230.  My patients are always asking for shoe recommendations, so I like to have a large pool to draw from for different sports and activities. The folks from Inov8 were kind enough to send me a pair to review. I picked the brightest color they had available, the Azure Blue and White. This shoe is super lightweight, at 230 g (or roughly 8.1 oz). It has a flat, low profile midsole with a sticky rubber outsole (the F-Lite tread pattern). The shoe features a 6mm differential from the heel to the forefoot. The upper is constructed of nearly 100% mesh, which is breathable and drains well if it gets wet during a trail run. It provides toe protection and has a low, comfortable back and cuff. The outsole provides traction on slippery rocks and wet grass, but since the shoe does not have lugs, it does not collect and track mud. Because these shoes are minimalist, they may take some getting used to. If you are used to wearing built up running shoes with serious arch support, you may need to take your time to build up the muscles in your foot with these shoes before running distances. For folks who have already made the switch to “Five Fingers” or barefoot running, this shoe is very comfortable and provides protection from the elements when you are running outdoors. cash advances definitionquick loan with bad credit The sticky outsole also makes these shoes ideal for indoor workouts including box jumps, jumping rope, weight lifting, rope climbing, and rings. The shoes are so lightweight that you will barely notice […]

Let’s Get Specific

Accomplishing a Goal from Ann Wendel on Vimeo. I am proud to say that I have been getting strong! I set a goal for myself back in May that I would be able to get across the monkey bars at the playground (“You mean like this, Mom?” my 13 year old said as she easily went back and forth a few times……..) Yes, like that. Most of you know that I was a competitive swimmer for all of my growing up years, and even made the travel team as a freshman at a D1 school. I had a seriously strong upper body. I looked forward to the Presidential Physical Fitness Test every year, because I couldn’t wait to school almost everyone at the pull ups (except for you, Karl Torchia, because you were the man!) I could bang out at least 15 pull ups without breaking a sweat. So, it was a shock to me a few years ago when my kids started doing the monkey bars, and I jumped right up to show them how it was done, and couldn’t hold myself up on the bar. Uh-oh. I guess I had more important things to do, because I just never tried again. Until last spring. I was ready to commit to my goal. I started out slowly, just hanging on the bar. Then, I got to where I could do 1 or 2 rungs before I had to drop down. And I kept practicing all summer long, until I finally did it all the way across! Yea! And then I thought, well, maybe I can do chin ups, too. So I started working on chin ups (palms facing me). I began with negative chin ups, jumping up and then slowly lowering myself down, and progressed to one leg assisted […]
